An interview with Tisha Oehmen, COO of Paradux Media Group

Internet marketing association

Paradux Media Group COO Tisha Oehmen joined us to discuss her marketing agency, her background with credit unions and the the difficulties involved in handling small business taxes.

Can you tell us what was involved in the decision to start Paradux Media Group?

Tisha Oehmen: Mike Frey and I started Paradux Media Group when we moved to Southern Oregon. Both Mike and I have significant backgrounds in marketing, and there was limited competition in the Medford market for advertising agencies, so opening a marketing agency made seemed to make sense.

Tell us about Paradux Media Group and the services you offer.

Tisha Oehmen: Paradux Media Group is a boutique hybrid agency. We specialize in crafting a brand message for our clients and applying it across the traditional media channels and the new online media channels. This gives our clients a one plus one equals three effect, allowing them to effectively and efficiently leverage their marketing dollars for maximum return.

How was it that you ended up finding your niche?

Tisha Oehmen: The marketing world shifted with the mainstreaming on Facebook and Twitter. I was working in corporate marketing at the time and was having regularly conversations with my team about the fact that we had to include Facebook and Twitter in our marketing arsenal. Their answer was that they didn’t know how and didn’t have the time. Two problems that Paradux Media Group was able to solve for our clients.

Later, we added WordPress website design to our suite of services in order to more fully integrate the website into marketing campaigns. Having the ability for a client to be able to access and change their website to coincide with marketing campaigns was something that traditional hand coded HTML websites were not able to provide.

What can you tell us about your background, education and work history?

Tisha Oehmen: My marketing background started with credit unions, where I created brands and marketing campaigns that grew loans and deposits. Because of my front and back-office operations experience, I can conceptualize, develop, and implement initiatives to foster brand effectiveness. With over 15 years of experience in branding and marketing, I have successfully led large financial institutions and healthcare companies down the path of renaming their business.

But the work I love to do is avoiding the unnecessary name change, when it isn’t in their best interest. Often, we are able to find the true value and equity that has always been in a company’s brand – it just needed dusting off. I have a knack of being able to communicate the value so that the CEO/Business owner so that they can see its luster and then with a little polishing, make it shine company wide.

I am best known for developing long lasting branding campaigns that speak to the heart of the business, the brand, and the community. True brand, no matter how big or small, has longevity. Creating branding campaigns that have longevity, that have a laser-like focus, is where Tisha thrives.

I have an M.B.A. from the University of Oregon, from where I also earned a B.A. in Political Science. I have also just had my first book published, Finding Brand: The Brand Book Tutorial. The book is about how create a brand book, and through it, a brand.

What is the most rewarding part of running Paradux Media Group?

Tisha Oehmen: The most rewarding thing for me is getting to make a difference for my clients. Knowing we had a positive impact on their bottom line is always the best part for me. Well, that and seeing our creative out there in the real world, there’s nothing like driving past a billboard, or hearing a commercial we created to make me feel all warm and fuzzy..

What about disappointments? Have there been any since you started your company six years ago?

Tisha Oehmen: The benefit and tax structure issues involved in owning a small business. While I appreciate the necessity of self-employment tax, flexible spending accounts that aren’t available to the business owners, and the differences between receiving a “paycheck” and “distribution,” it’s challenging as an individual.
